Sony (and Minolta) color profiles for Adobe Camera Raw and Adobe Lightroom - UPDATED 2021/03/07

I'd appreciate if you can support this work, disabling your adblock and clicking on the advertise on the top right corner. Thanks

I've created new Adobe Camera Raw and Adobe Lightroom color profiles (standard, faithful, landscape, leica, portrait, neutral, positive film, skin tone darker, skin tone lighter, vivid blue, vivid green, vivid red e vivid) for every Sony (and Minolta) interchangeable lens cameras:
I've photographed, under the direct sunlight, a 24 color GretagMacbeth / X-Rite table, then, after converting the RAW to DNG, I've created the standard color profiles with Adobe DNG Profile Editor. Starting from the standard profile and using as reference the "non standard" Nikon, Canon and Leica's profiles, I've created the creative profiles.

The profile files must be saved under the following folder (be aware that it could be hidden):

Windows:
"C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles"

MAC OS:
"HD/users/yourusername/LibraryApplicationSupport/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfile"

I'd appreciate if you can support this work, disabling your adblock and clicking on the advertise on the top right corner. Thanks

Thanks for sharing the profiles.
One comment: would you consider changing the internal profile name to be identical to the file name?
When Lightroom shows them in the list, you see something like "Vivid", so it's hard to know if it picked the right file.

Maurizio said...

The correct profile is always chosen, LR search the camera id inside each files.

Hi There,
Awesome work - a huge thing for alpha/nex owners.
A question- now that LR 3.5 is out - any chance of creating profiles for 5N anytime soon?

Maurizio said...

I've just updated the colour profiles adding support for all the new sony models (A65, A77, NEX-C3, NEX-5N and NEX-7).

Thanks for your efforts and your generosity in helping others!
Is the profile for the 5N created with the camera or did you just choose an existing one that matched?
Best regards,
Christian

Maurizio said...

Actually the NEX-5N standard profile is based on the NEX-5 real profile. I'm still thinking what NEX buy, the 5N or the 7.

Grazie. Molto gentile da parte tua.

Hi, thank you so much for these... may I get some help? I've tried looking for the folder to install this, but I don't have CameraRaw, only Lightroom. Where must I install these files for Lightroom? Thank you much again..

Maurizio said...

The folder is the same also if you don't have PhotoShop installed, CameraRaw and LightRoom share the same engine.

AXII said...

After a little digging, I found the folder :) It was hidden, and I had hidden folders turned on. Thanks again Maurizio!

Maurizio said...

I forgot to write that the folder is hidden in Windows.

Thank you for this God send for those who are who are challenged by all this--let alone bringing new life to my Nex 5! Thank you so much

Thank to everyone for your comments!

Crix said...

Hi Maurizio,
I was also tempted between 5N+EVF and 7.
7 has more knobs, integrated EVF and flash shoe, better looks, but too much pixels (Comparing A77 versus 5N at dpreview comparometer, 5N is better IQ IMHO) and more noise. The 300 Euros plus is not deciding factor.

The 5N apparently has excellent IQ, small size, EVF is tiltable and touchscreen, but only alternating use of flash/evf/extmicro.

In the end, IQ is the most important thing for me. I have a remote control unit triggerable with the integrated one, so that is not BIG problem.

And lastly, I thought, inspite of all the hype, a 7 is still only a premium compact camera with CDAF, so it still lacks a lot compared to any DSLR - except the price -)).

The 5N is the same, but at least with a much lower, adequate price. And when taking a look at the fastly revolving evolution wheel of bodies (M43 bodies within less than 6 months, Nex 3, 5, C3, 5N and soon 7 within less than 1.5 years) an even better Nex will be lurking around the corner.
So I'd recommend the 5N now and tommorow, who knows -))

Maurizio said...

I just ordered the NEX-5N...

Just install Sony NEX5.
Really appreciate your work..

Crix said...

Hi Maurizio,

still no good weather for updating the 5N files? :-)
How are yor experiences with your 5N
Best regards,
Christian

Maurizio said...

I hope to have the time tomorrow, it's not so easy with a work and a family with two little children.
I really like the 5N, I mainly shot with manual lenses in raw, and so I've not used to much many of its features (that are jpeg and af lenses only), but the quality of the files (photo and video) is much better than the NEX-5.

I just want to correct You - in Windows 7 one should save in the following folder: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles

Maurizio said...

The folder I've shown is the general one and it's valid for every windows users, yours folder is correct but the profiles will be avaible only for one user.

Raff said...

Thanks - any chance you can give me some pointers how I can load up the profile in Light Room (Adobe) once they are saved on my MAC? bit new to this... Cheers

Maurizio said...

Just copy the correct camera folder (for example "Sony SLT-A77") under the path "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/Camera".
Now you will find the profiles under the Develop module, Camera Calibration section.

Raff said...

Thanks so much Maurizio - 1st day on light room so a lot to learn.. Loving the colour profiles esp Faithful and Neutral... Found the standard Adobe profile made all the Nex 7 shots look way over saturated... Keep up the great work! Raff

I have a Sony SLT-A57K model. Is there an original camera profile for Lightroom?

Maurizio said...

You should use the A57 profile's link, the "K" only means that your model is sold with the kit lens.

Unknown said...

I really love your profiles and have used them for all my Sony cameras.
Is there way to make them work fully in LR4?

Currently if I use the A77 profile it wants to switch back to the previous LR3 options.

Maurizio said...

I'm using the color profiles with LR 4.2 without any issue, could you please more specific on the error? Are you using LR3 saved presets? If so, you should save them again with LR4.

Unknown said...

Sorry you are correct! I used one of your profiles to create a preset in LR3 before I upgraded to LR4.
When using that preset in LR4 it reverts back to the LR3 settings.
I have now created a new preset using one of your recent profiles and all is well. I was getting mixed up between profiles and presets.

I fixed the A99 profiles, exif reports A99V instead of A99 (like for the A55) and ACR/LR didn't recognize them.

Cam you create a Fuju like color profile for the SLT cameras please?

Unknown said...

Maurizio, thank you for the Sony a77 profiles. I think I finally figured out how to get them in my LR4.3 (after several attempts). Here's how I did it: After downloading your profiles I unzipped the folder and moved all of the profiles into a folder on my desktop. From there I searched for and opened the correct file that has the Camera Profiles (per your instructions) and then moved each profile into the Camera Profiles folder. Afterwards I opened up LR4.3, picked a photo to develop, scrolled down to the Camera Calibration header and clicked onto the appropriate profile. They all seemed to be there. I can't wait to try them out. Thanks again.

Thank you so, so much for these!

Maurizio said...

You must put the profiles under the folder:
C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\Sony DSLR-A850\

Unknown said...

I am so confused on how to get your camera profiles into lr4! I have downloaded the a77 file and unzipped it but that's as far as I can get. Could you please walk me through the process, step by step? I have no idea what you mean by "just save it to your HD, users,..."

Unknown said...

I found the contents folder under Lr4 but there was no library folder. I tried going to resources and found camera profiles but when I pasted the dng files in that folder they didn't show up under the camera calibration section of Lightroom. I even tried restarting the computer and Lightroom and that didn't help either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unknown said...

Nevermind, I figured it out. Man was that a doozy! I figured out that you have to go under the develop presets folder in lightroom and find it that way. Anyhow, thank you for your good work, they work great!

Never mind. I removed the presets, checked LR, and then added them back in, and noticed the added Camera Profiles.

Is there a way for me to rename the profiles so they showup with my camera name in front of it?

Maurizio said...

Dear Otter,

"Camera Name" has no sense in front of profiles names, LR will show you only the matching profile of the camera belonging to the selected picture.
Also, with standard names, you can, for example, assign "Vivid" profile to all the imported images, despite of the camera model.

ciao Maurizio.

Maurizio said...

Ugo Baldassarre said...

Maurizio said...

Dear, thank you for your work. It is thanks to you, I realized what a real LightRoom!

Hi Maurizio.
Thanks for all your effort!
Your profiles are very welcome. I really appreciate it.

I'm using LR 5.4 ACR 8.4. Unfortunately all Nex-6 Profiles produce a green tint. To bad. I was hoping to fix that one barrier which currently stops me to switch from Nikon to Sony Nex.

Anyway, thanks a lot.

I've downloaded some NEX-6 raw sample from:

http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/sony_nex_6_review/sample_images/

and I didn't notice any green cast after applying the color profiles, on LR 5.4.

Unknown said...

Dear Maurizio,
Thanks again you for your effort to verify the problem I reported.

This is pretty unfair ;)

The raw files which my nex-6 produces, act differently to your profiles than the raws you can download form photographyblog.
Sounds weird, I know. But I was able to reproduce that.
Well, I have no clue about the reason. Maybe because my nex-6 has a different firmware loaded (the latest one) than the nex-6 photographyblog used for their review? Would you mind to check some of my raw's. Could be that there are other nex-6 users facing the same problem.
Thanks. Erol

Dear Maurizio,

I guess I found the reason regarding the green cast I discovered with your nex-6 profiles.

I set the WB while the Adobe "" "Camera Portrait" profile was applied. I used a reference photo where I hold a gray card. The values I got was Temp 5400, Tint 18. Then I applied your profile "Portrait" and got that strong green cast.

Now, while your profile was applied I set the WB again, and voila, the green was gone. The WB values I got now was Temp 5600, Tint 50.

I was not aware that you need to reset the WB when switching over to your profiles. If you stay between your profiles, the WB keeps fine. Just if you change between your and Adobe's one.

There are a few comments here about green casts. It's quite possible that they made the same mistake I did.

Thanks again for your profiles.
They work and look great! :)

Please note that your Minolta 5D and 7D links are reversed. The 7D link downloads the 5D files, and the 5D link downloads the 7D files.

Maurizio said...

Thanks, I've fixed them.

I have placed the Sony SLT-A77 folder in the following location: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/Camera The only profile that shows up in Lightroom 5.4 or Camera Raw 8.4.1 is Adobe Standard. Please help - I am going crazy!

Thank you! I really didn't like the magenta skin the A7s would give people, your portrait profile was a great help!

Hello Maurizio, I am following your good work. Can you tell me whether (and if so when) you publish an profile for the Sony RX100m3. Mnay thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

Michele Caminati said...

Ciao, grazie mille dell' ottimo lavoro!

Maurizio said...

Michele Caminati said...

Thanks a lot for the profiles (using A77)

Hello Maurizio,

i was unhappy with the colors from my Sony A7r when processing the RAW files. There is no way to adjust them to look like the gorgeous JPEGs in Lightroom. Of course you can change all colors even individually that is all based on your camera profile and the ones for the A7 series are poor in my opinion.

I now use your profile "Faithful" as a starting point and i like it.

I wrote a little article on my blog at gerhardsphoto.com and also put up a link to you site. I hope that is ok with you.

Thanks again.

Ciao Elderin,

Thank you for the comment and the article on your blog.

I'm sorry I have little time to improve and extend the profiles.
